Personal background
Hey. I recently moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA from New England. I'm 34 and working as a software quality engineering intern for Sybase. I went back to school kind of late in life, I guess, but I've been twiddling with code since ... somewhere around the time coordinate of 1980 c.e. That's about the same time I took up the guitar. I also play some percussion. No bands right now. I'm thinking about getting back out to play again on my own to meet more poets, musicians and oddly refined creatures, though. Live courageously. 93
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I refuse to completely discard any possibility without reason. It's possible that there is extra-terrestrial life. If there is, it's doesn't seem likely to be like us at all, really. The benefits and dangers of making such a discovery, I'm afraid, will be up to the media spin.

A beacon? Why not? Isn't that kind of what SETI is hoping something else out there is doing?

I run it because i think it's really neat. It's an amazing example of distributed processing and if nothing else we are getting a highly analyzed radio map of the galaxy about us. Even if we don't find ET, the data may be of use in other ways.
