Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that there is life out there. Those individuals who dismiss this idea as folly, border on the arrogant, naive, or narrow minded. We are a little fish (earth), floating in a vast sea (universe). If the wonder of life can happen on our rock, then it MUST have occurred elsewhere.

Who knows when/if we will ever discover or be discovered? Could we already have been discovered? If such a discovery entered the public domain, I can only forsee mass hysteria and panic. For another life form to have managed to reach us, they will surely have to be so far technically advanced that they could force their will upon us. This could be bad news for human/life on earth. We would have to hope that they do not harbor our worst faults. Our initial reaction, which I fear would be that of to use force, could well assign us to history. On a brighter note if they "came in peace" then we would be able to take a giant technological leap - the giant leap that mankind has achieved in the last 100 years would pale into insignificance. Imagine no more sickness/famine/war? Surely we could reach a harmony never seen before on Earth?

Should we seek out ET? That is the million dollar question. Could this bring armegeddon? or utopia? If I were to say that we should not, then I would be assuming that ET's characteristics are those of the worst in humans; if I were to say that we should transmit a beacon then I would be hoping that ET only harbors our best characteristics.

I have been wanting to run SETI@Home since I first heard about it. It is only recently that I have been able to purchse the h/w and connection to allow me to do this from home.

Why do I do it? For the unknown; for the blip that might just indicate FIRST CONTACT.......
