Profile: Mike Gordon

Personal background
I am a software developer\\manager in St. Louis. I was raised in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from Blackburn College in '93.

I have been married for 19 years and I have 2 kids that pretty much occupies any free time I have. The hobbies that I do enjoy on those rare moments of personal time are reading (science fiction of course), baseball, football, hiking\camping, movies, harder rock music and a few games on my computer at home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think ET exists out there? Yeah. I think its rather self centered for us to think that we are the only sophisticated organisms amongst the billions of systems out there.

Do I think we should be advertising where we are? Probably not. I think it is better to scan and find signals than to advertise where we are. We have no idea what to expect from an alien species. They might not posses a conscience or might view us like we view monkeys. Any species capable of contacting us is more likely to be more advanced, and thus more dangerous for that reason alone. But, I doubt there is any extraterrestrial life close enough that really cares anyway.

Why do I use SETI? I think its a good step on our species' behalf to become self-aware of our universal surroundings. Also, it represents good breakthroughs in the use of computers.

Suggestions? We listen for signals, but we seem to only listen for the kinds of signals that we may emit. What signals occur in nature (or the universe) can we listen to? From there, look for repeating patterns, or observe mathematical sequences in those signals. Perhaps a species has learned how to use naturally emitting stuff akin to us sending smoke signals. What about visual patterns as well? Look for shapes in nebulas, stars, clusters, etc. that don't appear natural in several spectrums.
