Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think ET is out there? Most definitely. Taking into account the vast size of the universe, I would say the odds are in our favor. Our solar system and even The Milky Way Galaxy itself are but pinpricks in the vastness of the universe. To think that the Earth is the only planet harboring intelligent life in the middle of all this hugeness is simply unimaginable to me. It's not a matter of "if" but "when". As far as importance goes in the realm of discoveries, this is the big one. When we discover intelligent life other than our own, it will no doubt be the most important discovery in human history. The implications of this will be far reaching. Religious groups will certainly have alot to think about, and people in general may finally begin to realize that our petty little arguments, wars, intolerance, are just plain stupid things to waste our precious time on. I mean, if you've got a problem with black people or asians, or whatever, how are you going to feel about the 7ft. tall bluish tinted dudes from the planet Stellaxia 6!!? What I'm saying is that this discovery would put things in perspective. Maybe if people know that there are other beings out there with the potential to judge us and our ways, it will cause them to think of ways to improve our world instead of continuing to destroy it. I don't think people will want our planet to be known as "the one on the corner with the overgrown grass and a car on blocks in the front yard in the bad part of the galaxy". I am proud to be a part of the SETI@home project. Peace.
