I'm a 56 year old electrical engineer working in the electronics industry. I have two grown children who are out on there own and one new addition to the family. Raising a child at an older age has given me a new perspective on life, for the better! I have many interests including, but not limited to:
listening to music of most genres, although classical pop and jazz are currently my favorites, hiking, camping, stamp collecting, computers in general, and photography. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

Well, I honestly agree with what Carl Sagan wrote in his book 'Contact', that if we are the only intelligent life, the universe is an awful waste of space. Anyway, I would hate to think mankind is the "intelligent" life form in the universe.
I don't think a special purpose signal transmitted into space is worthwhile. Anything like that would either be relatively narrow in beam width to be effective from a power stand-point, or it would be lost in the RF clutter we generate. A narrow, high power beam has a low probability chance of being detected. I believe we generate more than enough RF clutter, however intelligible, that someone receiving it will know we're here. If a beacon signal was established, it should transmit mathematical primers along with basic information about mankind and the planet earth.
I run SETI@Home because I do believe there is life out there and the sooner we attempt to find it, and the more effort we put into it, the sooner we find some of earths neighbors. Overall, I think the folks at SETI@Home are
