Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I firmly believe that we are not alone in this universe, but rather that planets similar to the earth in orbits around stars similar to the sun are more likely than not to harbor life. That is, that the presence of life is not an anomily but the normal status for such planets. I think the only valid question is the level of intelligence of such life, and I venture that when discovered it will range from rudimentary to levels which vastly exceed earthly humanity.
Because of the vast distances involved in space, I think our first confirmation of extraterrestrial intelligent life will be by signal anomily detection, most likely intentionally originated by some intelligence at astronomical distances. Rudimentary life will most likely be discovered here in our own solar system. Benefits of contact in the form of knowledge and information in sciences and medicine and such would be immeasurable. As for dangers of such contacts, of course they exist, but perhaps less so if we know that creatures are out there.
We should transmit a beacon into space for others to find, such beacon containing all the basic information about life on earth, that we wish no hostilities, to exchange information, share cultures and learn about each other. Physical contact with such extraterrestrial life would not be possible by earthlings for centuries anyway, and if the aliens mean us harm I don't think we can do much about it.
SETI@home gives me an opertunity to help in my own tiny way in the effort to move forward in the development of the human race. I think it is a fine idea as it lets us "homebodies" participate too.
