Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I became interested in SETI@home the moment I heard about it. From the time I heard about it until the time I was running it was about 10 minutes :).
Why do I think it's worthwhile? Why is the search for any unknown worthwhile? Why are we here? What makes us US? If ever a question bordered on the unnecessary, this one is the one...
Is there other intelligence is the universe? Of course. Will we discover any of it? The universe is so large, and our current capacity to search it so small, that it's hard to say.
The main benefit AND danger of such a discovery are absolutely the same... We will know, without a doubt, that WE are not the "only" ones...
Should we transmit a signal for others to discover? Hmmm, radio, television, communications to/from satellites and space vehicles... I think we are ;)
