Profile: Ron Shurtz [BlackOps]

Personal background
Born in 1954, I'm a Structural Engineer with a background in highway bridge design and computer programming. I work for the Kansas Department of Transportation in Topeka, Kansas, USA. Hobbies are computers, reading science fiction, and the music of RUSH.
After observing the human species for a number of years, I find it hard to believe we will find anything much stranger. If we can survive this long on our limited IQ, then the odds of other "intelligent" life existing seems very plausible.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Extraterrestrial life does exist. It may most often be manifested as non-sentient organisms. I believe that the odds of discovering sentient life forms is very small since we maintain a planet bound existence. If it happens, it would be purely by chance because of this. If extraterrestrial life, especially sentient life, were discovered, I believe a large segment of society may not be able to come to a comfortable mental compromise with the concept.
2. I'm afraid we already have transmitted a beacon with the radio, television, and other communication signals escaping from our planet. They may not be what we want to say, but they are the first signals that may be intercepted. I believe that we should transmit a dedicated beacon. The information may be just a simple "We're here also.", though the signals I mentioned earlier have already essentially said that.
3. I run seti@home to help in exploring a possibility of discovering extraterrestrial life. I feel it is something we can do since traveling about to look for other life is not presently an option. Sadly, by the time we receive a signal or get ours received, the sender will probably be long extinct. A space traveling species would have better odds running into our signals at a closer range than sitting around waiting for them to travel several thousand light years. Anyway, if we are going to be found, we are going to be found. It still doesn't hurt to do our own looking.
