Personal background
I think that I decided that I really loved the movie "The Mummy" when Racheal Weisc exclaimed "I am. . .a libraran." As a librarian it was nice to see a counter-stereotype presentation of one on film (see: Star Wars 2: Send in the Clowns for a more typical presentation).
Oh, so I guess I should say something about why I am running Seti@home on both machines at home and at work. Well, I've been an SF fan for a long time so the idea of contacting extraterrestrial intelligences has been with me for a long time. When I heard about this opportunity to help find evidence that they are actually out there I leapt at the chance. So there you have it, an American-Librarian-SF Buff-Atheist is eager to loan the excess power of his computers to the SETI project in the hope that someone decides to say "Hello."
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? Yes.

Do I think extraterrestrial intelligence exists? I don't know, but wouldn't it be worth something just to find out?

Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? Well, if it means that someone on some planet out there will have a spike on his or her or its computer screen indicating a probable extra-stellar signal, then yes.
