Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

Yes, I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists. How could it not? If you
consider the number of stars in the universe, the chance that a given star might
have a hospitable planet, and the time it would for life to actually develop on
such a planet, you can IMO come to no other conclusion than the one that
extraterrestrial life does indeed exist.

Discovery will probably come eventually, and methods like SETI seem to be
good candidates for the ones that will actually lead to success in the end.
Whether this will be a good thing or not is something I cannot even speculate
upon, though.

For the same reason, I cannot say whether it would the humans should
transmit a signal themselves or not. It might lead to good things as well as to
bad things, and noone can predict what will come out of it. But in the end,
it will most likely make no difference, anyway.

The reason why I run seti@home is quite easy: because I like the feedback, like
to see the number of work units I have processed increase, and like to be a
member of my team and see how I compare to the other members. I also think
that seti@home is a cool example of what can be achieved by a number of
dedicated people.
