Personal background
My name is Gudrun, I'm 37 years old, german, female (I mention that because I know, that my name isn't well known to identify if it is male or female) and I simply work in an office. My hobbies are many-sided but in fact point to the questions, who we are, where do we come from and how did it all start. I try to find a glimpse of an answer by studying physics, astro-physics and astronomy (watching stars and planets with my small telescope), evolution-biology and last but not least philosophy - all as a lay of course. Additionally travelling around the world is one of the most important things for me and I share all this with my wonderful friend Thorsten (I hope he will forgive me to mention his name in "public")I read books, a lot of Sci-Fi and others. The protection of the environment - OUR world and it's beings is one of the most important things for me. Looking for persons who are interested in the same things I decided to edit my profile here at seti@home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I am sure tht extraterrestrial life exists but I'm not so sure if we will ever discover it due to this endless universe. It could happen tomorrow or never because I'm not so sure whether we are able to identify "them" as beings. Due to the lack of senses and abilities of the human beings (though we have an enormous variety of technical support) it could be that "they" are already very close to us but we are not able to see, feel, smell, hear or ???? them. I don't believe in a simple meeting in space on a planet or space-ship. Danger and benefit? The most terrible thing I can imagine is, that they are almost the same as we are! Then they ARE dangerous. 2. Send a light to a blind, a sound to a deaf - (see before) - but why not? What to send? - Easy - mathematic information, no words, something logical-based. 3. I run SETI on an old computer which needed more than 2960 hours to complete 8 work-units! That's not much but I feel to be a bit a part of science, a small support to scientists doing their phantastic and interesting jobs and finally - maybe I help to discover extraterrestrial life! I don't have a real view about the project - sorry. I hope SETI will be able to exist in the future, to get more time on the telescope, to be financially supported and to make more people interested in science and interested to be involved in such a unique project!
