Profile: Mike Mercik

Personal background
I live in Eastern CT and work as a Senior Security Engineer. I'm deivrced with 2 sons (21 and 24) and have just become (at the incredibly young age of 49!) a grandfather.

I play trumpet and enjoy performing all types of musice, especially blues and swing.

I like to garden and I enjoy hiking, traveling and most outdoor activities. I like to learn new things snd to become more familiar with the peoples, animal and cultures of the earth (and to date, I haven't found too many differences). Besides space and science, I'm also a history buff enjoy science fiction and fantasy.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do SETI because I firmly believe in the existence of life on other worlds. Considering that we're still discovering new things on this world, just imagine what is possible out there. Life (even as we know it) has so many incredible variations. Many people think about finding human-like life and there is certainly life like that in the universe. But I also like to imagine the wonders of intelligent life totally alien to us. If nothing else, the discovery of extraterrestials would certainly freak out a certain number of people on Earth that have cetain rigid beliefs about the whole subject.

Benefits and dangers? Can't be much worse than what goes on around this world all the time.
