Personal background
I am a 25 year old Computer Engineer. Currently I am wasting away my precious cycles working in the Si Valley in California. Occasionally I go to Lake Tahoe to snowboard. Since I can't run seti@home on myself, I use my down cycles to brew beer.

I am an atheist, which means that I don't believe in God or gods. Since my apostasy, I have found more solice in the discoveries of science than I ever did in so-called revealed religion. I'm not certain if this makes me more receptive to the idea of extraterrestrial life. I'm not even certain that it is rational to look for extraterrestrial life. That being said, it is fun being a part of a science experiment, and a part of science which is for the sake of science itself.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm not actually certain if extraterrestrial life exists. But then, nobody does. At the same time, I hope that it does, and I hope that SETI can detect it. I think it is the seach which is more important than the actual discovery. SETI@home users are taking part in a grand science experiment. That people participate at all tells us a lot about humanity. We are dreamers and optimists. We believe in the process of science and discovery. We are open to having our beliefs challenged. If we find extraterrestrial life somewhere in the universe, we will rejoice rather than cower. And while the search continues, and we are left not knowing whether we are alone or simply being left alone, we can embrace our uniqueness as humans, a species which loves to challenge itself with difficult questions with perhaps unknowable answers.
