Profile: Doms

Personal background
I was born 15th February 1963 Lancaster, England and I am an artist. Influencing my paintings is insatiable curiosity about the universe. I view consciousness as the universe becoming self-aware. The sea and in particular stormy weather where the mixing of the elements blurs the boundary between land, sea and sky provides a powerful metaphor for exploring the profoundly interconnected creative relationship between consciousness and reality. My hobbies include astronomy, chess, cycle touring, mountaineering, snowboarding and oddly enough gold prospecting – at least when I visit Australia.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extra terrestrials almost certainly exist even if they are only microbial and I think that microbial life will be found in the solar system within the next century, it’s a matter of time, getting the technology right and sending people out there. Robots are fine but they are not intuitive, creative or adaptable in the way that people are. So where? Possibly Mars, probably subsurface, the poles, gullies or possibly in Europa’s Ocean. Equally important is the DNA structure of ET is it similar to ours pointing to a possible common ancestor or completely different to terrestrial DNA. Both possibilities have astonishing implications. DNA evidence pointing to a common ancestor with microbial life would lend weight to cross contamination through the transfer of material between planets but would leave us wondering if life exists outside the solar system. DNA or the equivalent of DNA if sufficiently different to Terrestrial DNA would indicate that life should occur as often as conditions are equable.

A defining characteristic of humanity is curiosity. Not to try to contact ET would mean that we have become less than we were. Attempting to communicate with ET has tremendous overtones of hope and curiosity about our place in the universe not just implied in a message for ET but for us. It says something about who we are. As to why I run seti, I’ve just answered that.
