Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am sure there is life (intelligent and otherwise) out there just waiting to be discovered. I am rather doubtful we will find it in my lifetime, but you never know. It would be very exciting. Of course until we can actually traverse the great expanses of space It seems unlikely we will be visiting any of these places anytime soon. If we were to be "found" first by beings able to travel here, I feel it would be a peaceful visitation. Afterall, if we could travel to an inhabited planet, wouldn't we be mindful of their saftey?....and the purpose of our trip would be solely to learn something. Why should it be anything different for some other intelligent being?

I run seti@home on my home computer as well as my computer at work. I think the project is wonderful and would be thrilled if it actually suceeds at finding an extraterrestrial signal. Although this project may take many years, you have to start somewhere. Besides, it would be a shame to miss a signal just because we were not diligent enough to continue looking.
