Personal background
I am from the UK and am an amateur astrophotographer. I bought my first 5" scope 2 months ago and spend many evenings in my back garden gazing at the heavens. For me, there is a real thrill in seeing your first galaxy, nebula or irridium flare for the first time - but the thrill never goes away. I would eventually like to build my own observatory and buy a 14" scope. I am still a novice and have a long way to go - but then, thats half the fun of it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first became interested in SETI@Home when I was at work 12 months ago, but only had a slow PC and modem. Now I have a 1.2Ghz machine and DSL so I leave it running 24/7.
I think, given the guessed size of the known universe and the countless galaxies, we would be kidding ourselves if we didn't believe there was someone else out there - maybe doing the same as we are.
The film "Contact" based on the SETI oroject is inspiring. How do we know how anyone would react to the one challenge that has, as yet, eluded man and make contact with an Extra Terrestrial species.
