Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I became interested in Seti at home when I first heard about it and the concept of distributed computing.
2. I like the thought of being part of the largest distributed computing project ever. The project is well defined with clear cut objectives. I think it is worthwhile because it is proof positive that utilizing unused pc cycles can accomplish great feats. Similar computer based projects, such as genome research should be developed to take advantage of one of mankinds greatest resources.
3. I think that there is no doubt about the fact that life exists beyond earth, whether E.T. will have intelligence equal to or greater than ours is one of the mysteries waiting for us to find out. Our past history shows us the potential dangers to both us and E.T. - just look at what happened to Neanderthal, North and South American Indians, etc.
I think, despite the potential dangers, we must transmit and continue to try to communicate with E.T. so that we and they might reach our full potentials.
