Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Is there life elsewhere? Heck YES! Will we discover it and when? Well, if we don't kill each other off first, yes we will discover it. Will it be through SETI@home? Who's to say. At least it is a good attempt.
I must say that in my opinion, sentient extraterrestrial life is probably so different that we may not even recognise it. Imagine if you will, a cloud of gas and dust a dozen light years long that is self aware. Or maybe a colony of small ant-like creatures working together to form a sentient being. I think that once we get out of our little corner of the Milky Way, life is going to be very strange.
Should we send a beacon? Absolutely! Those at the same technological level as us would be incapable of harming the earth. Those more advanced are probably already aware of our existence.
Why do I run SETI@home? Sure, I think ET detection this way is a long shot but it would be SO COOL if my PC was the one to hear it first!
I think SETI@home is a great attempt at finding ET. As the detection technology increases so will our chances of hearing something.
