Personal background
Well...
I'm from Scotland, I'm 39 and I am an I.T. Consultant.

I studied Astronomy and Mathematics at Glasgow University, but, being a mixture of misguided and 17, did not know how lucky I was, and squandered the chance of a career in Astronomy - something which I deeply regret now that I am old (!) and wise (!!).

I built my own telescope at 16 (6" Newtonian Reflector) which I still have, but now use an LX90 - which ironically due to the increased light polution in the area I now live (Midlands, England), does not provide much improved views.

My main hobbies are (obviousy) Astronomy, reading science/science fiction books and dreaming of my next life when I will get it right, and end up at the top of a Hawaiian/Chilean mountain looking at the sky through an 8 m telescope for a living !
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. YES. SETI seems like the most likely avenue. At a guess, sometime in the next 20 years. The benefits (at the risk of cliche) are vastly improved technology, particularly in the areas of medicine and planetary management, not to mention the potential to broaden our horizons, and 'come of age' as a species. Foremost, we would no longer be alone in the universe. Dangers : only to our new friends...

2. I thought we _were_ doing...

3. To increase the chances, to take part in one of the most important human endeavours, to be part of something huge.
The project is very impressive, very cleverly thought out, and very worthwhile.

Suggestions : How about a guide to help quantify some of the numbers - what are the best so far - what are good numbers etc.
