Profile: Kevin O'Connor

Personal background
I'm a computer dilletant born in the Truman years. Over the years, I've seen science fiction fall behind current events, and I've seen "just around the corner" breakthroughs never come to pass. The one thing certain about the unknown is that it is merely unknown, not nescessarily unknowable. It seems the more we learn, the more we realize there is to learn. I've been around, back, and out again, so to speak. I suppose I'm a techno-geek redneck, if such a thing can be. I'm much happier in the boondocks than in the boardroom, and I generally prefer a campsite to a luxury hotel. I have several computers, and even use some of them for things other than games and net surfing.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I feel the "Search for ET" is one of the most significant endeavors in Science. While we may never find anyone, that alone does not prove we are alone; it simply proves we have not yet found the evidence, or perhaps even that we are unable to recognize evidence we have found. There is no reason to assume someone on another planet would by default do things in ways we might expect. Should we find another race out there somewhere in the void, the possibilities are endless. As has been said, "if there is no life out there, that would be a terrible waste of space"
