Personal background
My name is John Coole, and I was raised in a small town in WIsconsin. I first caught the science bug from my brother's science fiction books he left in the attic. Couldn't stand school, so I enlisted in the Navy right out of High School. After 12 years, my knees were shot, so I was medically separated for degenerative joint disease. I worked as a maintenance electrician for another 7 years and then had my right knee replaced, at the age of 41. No longer being able to work, I was retired. I then turned to college and achieved a bachelor of science degree in Psychology. Since graduation, my wife and I have travelled here and there. We are now in the process of quitting full time RVing and moving into a new apartment because I just found out I need surgery on my right ankle for arthritic problems. Oh yeah, and they found a bone lesion on my right shin. But I'm still walking on my own legs for now so things are OK. Next stop, another total knee replacement. And life goes on.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI is great, but we need to colonize space before another big asteroid smacks us good and wipes us off the face of the earth.I think that this universe is way too big for us to be the only ones here. I think that for us to believe we are all alone is ridiculous. There has to be other life out there, probably more advanced than us. If they do exist, why would they want to contact us? Look at the news, read the paper, we are far to aggresive to be allowed out into the universe at this time. I don't believe that there will be any contact until we solve our problems here on Earth. Contact, when it happpens will be a wonderful thing. No longer will we feel so isolated, or alone. Perhaps great strides will be accomplished in the areas of health. A beacon could be a good thing. What should it say? How about Hello, are you listening to us? Feel like talking? I run SETI@home because I want to be part of space exploration. It is my small part that I can do, I'm too old and too crippled with arthritis to go off world, although I would like to place my request to sightseeing if it ever becomes possible. Keep up the good work. Remember, you won't find anyone if you don't look.
