Personal background
I live in Lawrenceville, Ga. and my hobbies are bass fishing, computers, music and star gazing. I started running the program on December 31,1999. I learned of the Seti@HOME program while watching ZDTV's show "Call For Help" with Leo LaPorte. My computer went down in late 2000, due to a faulty cdrw. I finally repaired it in March of 2002 and one of the first programs I updated was Seti@HOME.
Update 3/17/03- I'm now living in Lawrenceville, Ga., and now have my girlfriend living with me. So now I have a network of PC's to run Seti@HOME on. We have matching Dell Dimension 8250 2.8 gig desktops, a Dell Dimension XPST700, a Dell Dimension XPST600 and a Dell Inspiration 8100 Notebook... all with Seti@HOME installed on them. Although I must admit, we don't run the laptop all the time.
Update 9/28/05- Just downloaded the Boinc version to one of my computers just to see how I like it. My 'girlfriend' and I have been married for a year and a half now. Had a computer custom built for her graphics... and of course, seti... and have replaced the Dell 700 with a local built 3.2 gig machine. I'm running the Boinc version on the Dell 600.
Update 12/12/07- We have retired the Dell 700 and have added a Dell Optiplex 260 3.06 gig that I use for an office desktop. Also have added a Dell Optiplex 270 2.8 gig for my wife's office. I have added Boinc to my machine, however my wife won't let me add it to hers yet. She doesn't want to take a chance of it slowing down while she's working on it. I tried to tell her she could always put Boinc on 'snooze' when she's working...lol. We have also upgraded the network to wireless...
Update 12/21/07- The wife gave in, I now have Boinc on her office machine. She actually volunteered the computer. I had nothing to do with the decision she made. I guess she understands how I feel about running SETI.
Update 12/1/08- Over the last year, I have added two more units to my little network. Both are Dells... one being an Optiplex 270 3.0 gig and the other an Optiplex 280 SF 2.8 gig. I have had to take Boinc off of the wife's Dimension 8250.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As it was said in the movie "Contact", If there's no one out there, seems like a lot of wasted space. I believe there IS life out there and I'm glad to be able to do something, even though a small part, to help find it.
