Profile: Thermodyne

Personal background
I’m just a computer hobbyist, and enjoy keeping the systems in my domain busy. My goal is to reach 10,000 units before the end of 2002. I have been running seti for just a little over a year now, and started with the screen saver version running on a couple of systems. Now I have the command line version running on eight systems. I even have seti running on my router, which manages to kick out a unit a day.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that the very size of the universe guarantees that we are not alone. And I also think that we should be devoting more resources to listening for evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations. I do not think that we need to broadcast a beacon, we leak too many signals as it is. And if we should receive a message, then we should defiantly proceed with caution. If we were to make contact, it would cause a tremendous social upheaval. Many of our varied cultures would have to reevaluate the basic structure of their societies. And while this could be beneficial in the long term, the adjustment period could be very difficult.
