Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I do, yes, believe in extraterrestrial life. Sentient, at that. The numbers make it simply impossible for there not to be. How many different species, and how close they are, is another matter. As for the benefits and dangers...I don't think myself, or anyone, can realistically speculate on the matter. Aliens would be just that, alien.
As for the beacon...I'd say, sure. It's worth a shot. Information wise, something along the lines of Sagan's golden records would work.
And why do I run Seti@home? I think it's a worthy cause, and honestly...who wouldn't want to have the possibility of one day saying 'Yeah...my computer processed the spike that lead to the discovery of aliens.'? And suggestions? Make the application's screen saver a little more interesting and varied. |
