Personal background
I'm from all over, but currently live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A former music major/organist turned programmer, I've been through the gauntlet of corporate bankruptcies, hiring freezes and layoffs. Now I'm back in academia, working as a programmer at a university, and enjoying being back in the truly geeky environment. As for other things I do, I enjoy playing my harpsichord (Zuckerman double-manual Flemish), riding my motorcycle (2002 Yamaha V-Star custom 1100), and am currently studying for my ham radio license. I'm into politics, and am a devout Libertarian. Check it all out at http://www.lizstanley.com.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I believe extraterrestrial life exists. I don't believe in all the mysterious UFO-related conspiracies, though I do enjoy the X-files as entertainment. It would be incredibly arrogant to believe that we are the only life in the universe, that somehow it was created for us and us alone. There are already clues that there could have been, or could still be, microscopic life on other planets in our solar system. I think that will be confirmed within my lifetime. As for intelligent life, I believe it exists somewhere, but I'm not sure that there will ever be any contact due to the great distances involved. I don't think there would necessarily be any tangible benefits to discovering extraterrestrial life other than having a better understanding of the universe. Any dangers would come from ourselves, from those who want to suppress research and further knowledge because anything which they believe contradicts their ideology must be wrong and therefore dangerous.

It wouldn't hurt to transmit, but I don't know how practical it would be. Still, you never know.

I run SETI@home because I think it's a worthwhile project, and whoever came up with it really had a great idea.
