Personal background
I'm a 23 year old sys admin from Chicago Illinois. I've been running Seti@home on and off for over 2 years. I work for a financial firm and have been interested in Sci-Fi literature and ideas since I was young. I guess it was Asimov that really set me on my course to be a computer engineer, with "I, Robot". I've since read a great deal more science fiction works but I really enjoyed the Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy and Orson Scott Card's Ender Saga. I really believe were not alone in the Universe and that we'll get to interact with some other sentient species' at some point. I just think we need to evolve intelectually first, putting war, poverty, and disease behind us.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It is my belief that Extraterrestrial life exists. As history shows, society goes through stages, repeating key sequences of events that lead to growth and in some cases desimation. We need to isolate the places where society grows to be able to see how to make it through the technological conflicts we face today. I believe we should activly transmit and devise systems to transmit information at far greater speeds and over far greater distances than is possible today. I think we figure out a way to communicate before sending any information.
I run Seti@home to help in the breakdown of the data we recieve from the distant stars and hope to be able to help in other ways as the cause grows. With all software, every once in a while, we should go back to the drawing board and look at how we are analyzing the data and ask questions like "Why not work on smaller subsections of time and do more low level analysis of the interesting data?" or "Could we write a java applet that ran seti on a web page via a jvm?"

I'd be interested to know where the development of the software is going and if we plan to optimize for the different platforms (64bit Sun, or Dec machines...)
