Profile: Ambassador Kosh

Personal background
I am a 26 yr. old Geologist from the UK. I am currently working Offshore within the North Sea drilling for Oil and Gas reserves. My interests are Outdoor sports such as Mountaineering, and White Water Canoeing. I am also interested, (non professionally) in Scientific Research within the fields of Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Quantum Mechanics. I am currently reading up on String Theory.
Other interests include Pubs, Clubs and Technology. I believe very strongly that extraterrestrial life exists. I would go as far as to say that when the probabilities are analyzed, with reference to the size of the Universe, age, number of planets, abundance of the various elements essential to (known) life form types, and of course the fact we are here asking these questions the fact we are not alone is obvious.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My work within Geology gives me a unique perspective on things - especially regarding large time scales. When one starts talking of such large time scales, and in addition, such massive amounts of life occurring through pretty much the whole of these gargantuan time scales - at least 4 Billion years, and that is within our 'Infant' Universe, then how can one be so ignorant as to assume we are alone. There are more Stars out there than grains of sand on our entire planet, and many of those stars are no doubt capable of supporting life bearing 'Earth Like' planets.
I run seti@home because i think that finding other, (intelligent) life out there would take out race forward, both internally - and of course at this, at present, hypothetical point in time externally forward. Pretty much anything that increases the probability of this occurring is a good thing. My views on Seti, and Seti@home is that it is a worth while project, and is also massively under funded. But as most people know - if the Politicians are not getting anything out of it, then they are not bothered. For example, look at the amount of funding, and number of people looking for Asteroids / Meteorites at present. A Meteorite, (all be it perhaps combined with ongoing atmospheric pollution from the Dakhan Traps Flood Basalt) wiped out the most successful creatures that have ever lived on this planet, marking the end for many Dinosaurs that had been around for a lot longer than us! If a meteorite was to come our way at present it is quite possible that nobody from Earth would be looking for Extraterrestrial life anymore, or for anything else for that matter. It is frustrating to know that we are capable of doing so much more, and at this time. The technology is there, the people are willing and ready, but the entire human race is being held back by a bunch of scientifically mute, or unwilling bureaucrats. Come on people, don’t you want us to come out of the caves, or are you happy with rubbing stick’s together?
