Profile: Gertie

Personal background
I am a 1-year-old pug from Seattle, WA, US.
My primary occupation is freelance chewing,
although I also enjoy sniffing, sleeping and eating
in my spare time. I maintain
a personal website, including pictures of me over
the course of my life and a
live, 24-hour webcam. The site is available at
http://www.gertie.cc.

Despite living in the backyard of Microsoft, I always
extoll the virtues of free software.
Linux is my OS of choice!

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1.Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans
discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

I think extraterrestrial life exists. I have no idea when we will discover it,
but I expect it will likely be in the form of evidence from the past rather
than personal contact. Discovery of extraterrestrial life itself shouldn't
present any special benefits or dangers. If we discover advanced extraterrestrial
technology, that may well be a different story.

2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find?
If so, what information should we send?

A picture of me. And Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life". That should keep them
off-balance.

3. Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project?
Any suggestions?

Truth be told, I'm more interested in the powers and applications of distributed
computing than in finding aliens. I love the project, though, and also enjoy seeing
other user profiles.
