Personal background
I am a professional musician (supplementing my income with a full time position as a training specialist with a Texas company related to the utility industry). I am in my 50s and while not a "fanatic", I have been a fan of science and science fiction since I saw "War of the Worlds" when I was five years old. My Mom has never quite forgiven my uncle for taking me to see that movie.
I previously was a participant in seti@home, but circumstances took me away from active participation for the past couple of years. I'm running a faster computer now and am curious to see how things have changed.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I don't see any reason why extraterrestrial life should not exist. While I don't believe that extraterrestrials are more likely to be kinder, gentler and more understanding or humane that human beings, I have great concerns that human beings will exercise their highly-developed skills of corrupting and perverting everything they discover. That's not to say that the extraterrestrials wouldn't do the same.

We should send a signal that simply indicates our existence, nothing more.

I run the program because I can and though the odds are long in favor of intelligent life that can communicate back to us, I think the data needs to be analyzed for whatever information we can gain.
