Personal background
Aliens are one of the eternal obsessions of science fiction. The desire to know what life would be like on another planet -- how it would have evolved under a different set of environmental constraints -- is also a spur for real missions to Mars, not just their cinematic counterparts. And yet there are aliens all around us -- complex creatures whose basic chemistry is sufficiently similar to our own that we recognise them as living things.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the SETI@home project is a worthwhile activity that we should participate in.
