What is intelligent life? Communication is the key. Everthing communicates. If a races became spacefaring then they would have communication. All us earthlings need to do is listen and watch. Its a vast universe out there. Maybe we will get lucky.
Why do I run seti@home? Because I can. Because I believe in the idea that together we can do more then if we try to do it alone.
