Personal background
Greetings, SETIites! That's kind of a palindrome, isn't it? I am a 42 year old Arizonan. I work as a materials logistician for a major airline. You pilots and mechanics know what AOG means. My hobbies include astronomy, sailing, simulation wargaming, and chess. I guess that answers the essentials.

My friend Rob got me hooked up into SETI. He's extremely intelligent and just a great individual in general. It is gratifying to know that real science is being accomplished and that anyone with a computer can be a part of it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist? Probably. I think the Drake Equation would settle on a conservative 120 or so advanced extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy alone. If extraterrestrial life does exist, it would seem likely that humans would discover it accidentally within this century. The life form would probably be simple organisms like amoebas or fungus or viruses or bacteria, or something like that. Benefits of such a discovery would be an affirmation that Earth is not the only possible source of living organisms. Dangers may be diseases, especially insanity or stupidity, by wacko jackasses that already exhibit cranial-rectal inversion.

Transmitting a beacon for others to find is moot. A dedicated signal was already transmitted. Furhermore, we have about a century of transmissions already out in space. Since the days of Marconi and Forest, signals have been emanating from Earth. It would be interesting to note the reaction of an advanced technological civilization to some of the first television signals ever transmitted: Hitler at the 1936 Munich Olympics comes to mind. Better yet, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong on the moon.

I run SETI@home 24/7. Seems like a good use of otherwise idle processor time. This is an excellent project, but steer clear of government involvement.
