Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
No Question that extraterrestrial life is a possibility.
The likelyhood of ET being at the same state of technological
evolution as we are, is not very likely at all. When you
consider how long we have had the technology to broadcast
radio signals and the age of the universe, one would have to
ask are we too late to find ET? or perhaps we are too soon?
It is possible we could find a Signal from an ET that is
long ago extinct. I view this as search for the truth and
that is the true benefit. Dangers of finding ET?? For some maybe!!!
As for transmitting a beacon, I believe we should leave a footprint
to indicate that, Yes, there is an intelligent species here.
The data I am sure is probably also being used to discover other
phenomenon in the universe, and if not then perhaps it should be.
for example: Blackholes, Quasars, and perhaps even new unknown
phenomenon.
