Personal background
Hi, my name's Mick and I'm 30 years old and live in Northampton, England. My hobbies include reading, watching good films, travelling, computers, getting drunk occaisionally, and of course running seti@home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I personally think that it is a foregone conclusion that extraterrestrial life does indeed exist. I cannot believe that we are alone in the universe. Perhaps the great distances involved are what prevents contact with other extraterrestrial life, however, humans as a species are in the very early stages of development and I believe that contact will eventually be made. Most likely not in my lifetime, or perhaps not for many, many years or decades to come.

To my mind there are three possibilities when it comes to a 'what would happen?' scenario:

1] Discovery of extraterrestrial life could lead to communication and cultural and technological exchange. This could benefit both parties, the risk of course being the wrong use of information/technology gained through such an exchange. I call this the 'Star Trek' scenario.

2] Discovery could lead to nothing. What is to say that any extraterrestrial being or beings would be interested in us or our planet? I call this the 'why did we bother anyway?' scenario.

3] Discovery could lead to all out war. Total destruction of one or both parties. I call this the 'Independance Day' scenario.

I downloaded and run SETI@home because I think that if enough people look then eventually something will be found, and to be a part of that effort makes me feel that I am contributing something to humankind that will outlive me.

I think it is a good idea to let the general public get involved in something they no so little about.
