Personal background
I live in Texas, but I was born and raised in Georgia. At one point I moved to Arkansas, but I guess Texas is so big that the gravitational pull just sucked me right in!

I'm 49. I'm a licensed, certified orthotist. My wife is Sheila, and I have two sons: Brian, whose wife, Gail, is about to give birth to my first full-term grandchild; and Kurt, who will marry Jennifer next year and present me with a built-in 4-yr old (step)granddaughter, Cymberly.

My interests include astronomy (duh!), paleontology, geology, music, reading, aw heck, most anything that exists (or doesn't}! I learned of SETI@home from Astronomy Magazine a year or so ago and put off downloading it until a back injury gave me time to sit down and actually do it.

I built my computer three years ago. It's a Cyrix 233 chip on a Txpro board in an old DCA tower. It's kind of like the Millenium Falcon, only a LOT slower.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET life exist? Well, like Carl said, if not, it's an awful waste of space.

Will we discover it? Carl also pointed out the slim chances of finding a planet with a civilization at the same or greater level of technology as we at the same point of time in that planet's development. But, heck. We gotta try!

Benefits? Probably none financially, unless they teach us how to cop a wormhole and allow us to take our vacations there. Spiritually, however, it could give us a better perspective of our place in the universe.
Dangers? A lot of people may experience religous crises if they have to alter their beliefs to accommodate facts, but then, that's nothing new.

Should we send a beacon for others? We have been for years, inadvertently. Now if anyone calls back and says, "Send more of that Mannheim Steamroller music," we'll know for sure there's intelligent life out there!

Why do I run SETI@home? It's a big job and somebody's gotta do it. I'm just excited to do my small part.
