Profile: Kelly Mercer

Personal background
I currently live in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada and work in the wholesale computer industry. My interests include, but are not limited to, drumming, astronomy, short story writing.

I have a number of computers at my disposal and decided to run SETI on at least three of them.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The human race knows very little about what is actually out there.

It is hard to say just how the discovery of ETI will be made.

The possible benefit of an ETI discovery is the simple and absolute knowledge that we are indeed not alone. Maybe a new intellect can give us some insight into our own development as a species.

Possible drawbacks to the discovery and communication with other lifeforms could be our limited intellects and primitive insecurities may taint the whole experience.

As for transmitting anything specific like a beacon or such I do not feel this is necessary because our species hasn't been quiet since the very first radio broadcast. Our television and radio broadcasts should be a beacon enough albiet a possibly jaded one.

I run SETI@HOME as a show of support for those who pursue knowledge. I think the use of millions of computers in this search is a brilliant idea! We as a species should be more concerned with the acquisition of knowledge and the possible betterment of mankind on the whole. But we as a species would rather quibble over specs of dirt and differences of opinion. Maybe someday, before the discovery of an ETI, we will finally realize there is more to life than unnecessary conflict.
