Personal background
I was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and while I was a youngster my parents and grandparents collaborated in building a cabin on a lake just east of town. We would visit just about every weekend during the summer months, and my brother, sister and myself would haul a mattress down to the end of the dock and sleep outside. Back in those days (the '50's), one could almost see to the end of the universe, the sky was so clear and the nights so dark without the encroachment of civilization.
We would count shooting stars while we slowly fell asleep. When Telstar was launched, we would be able to follow its path across the heavens, and we tried to spot the first orbiting astronauts! Those were exciting times, filled with endless possibilities for humans in space.
During one warm summer night the sky became filled with an eerie green glow. It seemed to come from behind us, and as we looked up in wonder, we saw a meteorite streaking across the sky! It fell about ten miles away, and we were able to see a glow from the site where it (presumably) struck. As there was no sound of explosion my father later explained that it almost, but not quite made it all the way to the earth before it completely burned up in the atmosphere.
I think it was that night, more than any other, that my love of astronomy and all things scientific in nature was born.
I am now older and somewhat wiser, and currently have a career in computer software design, programming and analysis, but I will never forget the wonderful events of my childhood at the lake, and am constantly reminded as I and my children now gaze enraptured at the heavens today.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think there is a high probablilty of extraterrestrial life. However, due to the enormous distances and most importantly, the time involved across the universe, that it is highly unlikely another civilization is at, or near, the same stage of development as ourselves. Then again, as long as the possibilty exists, no matter the probablity involved, the SETI undertaking is a very worthwhile endeavor, and I support it whole-heartedly (and secretly hope that my small contribution will make it happen).
