Profile: John Serafin

Personal background
All about me in 2000 characters? That's easy...let's see, what are the things that occupy my time...1 wonderful wife, 2 great daughters, 2 dogs (who are also generally considered members of the family), 1 career (college professor), 10 years (but I hope less) to retirement. Hobbies include woodworking (I'm a rank amateur, but it's relaxing), home remodeling (well, that's started to seem like more of a chore than a hobby the last few years), and maintaining the home computer network (I thought these things were supposed to make our lives easier!). Current location: the original home of Arnold Palmer and Rolling Rock beer. Major pet peeves in life include telemarketers and deans (seems like neither ever actually care about what I have to say).

OK, the picture's not really me, but he's much more photogenic than I am.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I joined SETI@home simply as a way to support a scientific project in a neat way. It's great to see so many people from all over the world contributing to the effort. I have no idea if intelligent ETs are actually out there or not, but imagine the profound impact that such a discovery could have on us. On the other hand, if we someday come to the conclusion that we're actually all alone in this vast universe, in some ways that would be an even more fundamentally awe-inspiring outcome.
