Personal background
I read, watch, and write science fiction with every available second of the day and night. I love good hard sci-fi from Asimov, Heinlein, Pohl, and Silverburg, as well as so called space operas and other sci-fi on television, especially Star Trek, Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, Stargate SG-1, X-Files, Firefly, Andromeda, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Roswell, Quantum Leap, Dark Angel, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I enjoy comics, especially X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and the Thunderbolts. I'm also Star Wars fan, and enjoyed the movie Independence Day despite the scientific blunders.

I've written some fanfiction, mostly Star Trek, and I maintain a horse racing website, The Unofficial Thoroughbred Hall of Fame.

I am currently looking forward to the release of the Star Trek Voyager novel Homecoming by Christie Golden.

Since I have no social life, no family, and no career, I guess that sums it up.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I believe extraterrestrial life exists, and I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that extraterrestrial life does not disprove the existence of God (nor does evolution, the age of the moon, or any other scientific theory or discovery). And yes, I aim that statement at Guillermo Gonzalez, but Richard Dawkins is welcome to take equal offense. I don't like to be told that belief in God is due to ignorance any more than I like to be told that reading an article about evolution is a sin.

As for transmitting a beacon for others to find, this could turn out to be an extraordinarily bad idea, since we have no idea who would hear it first. If there is life out there, then there is no doubt lots of life. And the odds are good that there are some bad apples out there. For that matter, there are plenty of bad apples right here. And yet, if everyone's listening and no one's broadcasting, SETI isn't going to accomplish all that much, is it? So there are strong arguments either way.

I run SETI@home because I feel that if someone is transmitting, it would be a shame to miss it, and I'd like to give what I can to help. Also, it keeps my hard drive spinning, so my disfunctional suspend mode doesn't crash my computer every fifteen minutes. So that's a benefit.
