Profile: Jeffrey Hebert

Personal background
I'm an electrical engineer currently working as an officer on a submarine in the US Navy. I studied at Cornell University and specialized in digital signal processing, specifically in coding and compression of digital imagery. I currently oversee a division of ten men responsible for the proper operation of the reactor control suite on a nuclear submarine, but I also get to "play" with the most advanced sonar suite in the world.

Anyway, I hope to get back to working solely in my field after my Navy committment is complete.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think extraterrestrial life exists, though I find it hard to believe that we have kept perfect pace with other forms of life on other planets with regards to our current level of technological advancement. We are either way ahead of other civilizations, or way behind. If we are behind, then I think we already would have been found. So I think we are ahead, and space exploration is how we will discover ET life.

I run SETI@home because I think the distributed computer concept is intriguing, and also to aid the intellectual efforts of other scholars. Besides, it is a lot more useful than any other screen saver.
