Profile: Catherine

Personal background
My Name is Catherine and I'm a senior in high school in Austin, Texas. Growing up in Houston, home to NASA, I've been interested in space and astronomy my whole life. I used to be one of the millions of kids who wanted to grow up to be an astronaut. Not that I dont want to be an astronaut anymore, I've just become a little less delusional, and a little more interested in Astronomy, Cosmology, Astrophysics, the sciences of space. I'm kind of a romantic when it comes to astro, getting wrapped up in the myths of Perseus and Andromeda, or the myths of what was once thought about the chances life forms on our nieghbor planets Venus and Mars, and now the thought of contacting intelligent life. But its not just the stories I love either, just staring up at the sky on a clear night in the desert is enough to keep me enraptured. I love reading about anything to do with astronomy, I still read sci-fi books, but I've always read informational books on the subject as well, probably the only non-fiction books I liked as a kid. So now I'm at a time in my life when I need to make some decisions about my future. I'll be an astronomer forever, but the question is whether it will be as an amature (and then what will I do?) or a professional (and what will that entail?). None the less I'm looking foward to my future, and I'm thankful for the opportunities I have.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that intelligent extra-terrestrial life exists, but I realize that the chances of finding it any time soon are fairly slim. Still, I have hope. The fact that the human race has made so many advancements in technology and exploration in the recent past, I think those chances are greatly increasing. The romantic sci-fi lover in me wishes for contact with other life soon, but I'm content helping out a little with the SETI project in the mean time. I think its a great idea, and I'm proud to be a part of it.
