Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I think there are different forms of life out there, maybe some forms that we can't even imagine yet. To discover them we will have to redefine the meaning of life and living creature. It's very possible that while i'm writing these, people already discover life. But there would be many problems when we discover ET life. We have to be very wise not to endanger that form of life and our own either.
2. yes, we should. our position in the galaxy, a few knoledge about ourselves (culture, history) and messages of peace. The messages should be encoded as lightly as possible, so that a civilization as unevolved as possible should descipher the informations.
3. well, i hope to live the moment when we discover the ALIENS, though i don't think it will happen while i'm alive. but there are also interresting knoledge about pulsars, black holes and so on to be found with distributed computing and i'm glad to take part at such a project.
