Personal background
Oh, let's see. Grew up in San Antonio, worked in my beloved Austin for nearly 20 years, then got a new job in Plano. Plano != Austin, that's for sure. I manage an IT group at Tandem, I mean Compaq, oops, make that the new HP. To stay sane I play french horn in community bands and orchestras, since I'm not quite good enough to get paid for it.

Among other things musically, I'm a contributing editor for The Horn Call, journal of the International Horn Society, owner of the "Horn Player's FAQ," and publish 'net resources for community musicians (see http://boerger.org/c-m).

I've been playing with computers since the 9th grade - that would be 1974, on an IBM/360 mainframe with 32K of core memory which timeshared APL between 32 or so schools and commercial users. One of these days I'll have to get out of managment and back into "hands-on" work in the field.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Of course ET exists. Why should this be the only planet among the trillions and trillions out there with life? We're probably just about to find it on Mars (if not Europa), if only the pinheads in DC would fund NASA adequately. Oh, well, if we don't do it the Chinese or Japanese certainly will.

I run SETI@home because it was a groundbreaking distributed application that put all these wasted cycles to use. That, and it's plain cool!
