Profile: Christopher Nelson

Personal background
I'm a 35 year old computer scientist in Southern California and owner of a Web design company. I enjoy exploring, mountain biking, and travel, but due to an enormous workload, the only exploring I get to do lately is SETI@home.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Opinion on extraterrestrial life:
I think it's highly unlikely that we're the only intelligent life in the universe. I've always been fascinated by the stars, and find an evening of stargazing one of the most relaxing activities imaginable, but every time I look skyward I'm perplexed why we have not yet detected extraterrestrial life. The universe was around for billions of years before our little planet came into the picture, leaving ample opportunity for technologically advanced life forms to evolve. Personally, I think we're relative latecomers on the scene...who knows; maybe all the aliens gave up looking for extraterrestrial life 2 billion years ago. I don't think Earth has been visited by aliens. The distances are just too great, but hopefully, with the collective effort of SETI@home participants, we'll find something out there.

Danger of finding signal:
I don't think there is any danger associated with humans discovering an advanced extraterrestrial civilization, unless we intercept orders to destroy the Earth or recipes for human soufflé. The only possible danger I can imagine is an extraterrestrial civilization discovering us. All an alien civilization would have to judge us on is our history. We're a violent species, and might not be welcomed on the intergalactic stage.

Should we transmit:
No. We've already been sending our television transmissions into space for over 50 years, so why add to the clutter? If I were forced to come up with a message, I'd send "Hello...stop. Send 6 billion 'common sense' pills...stop."

Why do I run SETI@home:
Hope. The thought that we're alone in the universe is too depressing. It would be sad to think that we're the best God can do.
