Personal background
Running FreeBSD 4.3 on a tiny dedicated PC. Since this is a prototyping system it usually isn't working very hard, so SETI@home gives it something productive to do with unused machine cycles.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I'm sure extraterrestrial life exists. Finding it is another problem, but I don't think that it is possible to say with any certainty how easy or hard the problem of finding it may be.

2. Here again, it's impossible to say whether this is a good or bad idea. We have no idea what is out there, and without knowing something about what exists, we cannot know if it is advisable or inadvisable to advertise our existence.

3. SETI@home seems like a good cause, and since the PC running it is always up anyway, it puts the idle processor cycles to good use. I don't know if SETI@home will ever find anything, but the only way to find out is to try.
