Personal background
I am a full-time programmer and part time instructor at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.  I participate in this program because looking at the sheer number of stars in this and other known galaxies, the odds that we are the only intelligent life in the universe are overwhelmingly against us.

Perhaps one of the others will come along and help us realize how selfish and petty we've become as a species.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Extraterrestrial life HAS to exist.  The odds that it doesn't are just silly.

2. I like the approach we're taking now.  Passively listening in to what's happening in the cosmos.  My daddy always said that it was better to be quiet and thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt.  Besides, we've already been sending a beacon ever since radio and TV were invented.  Somewhere, out there, someone else's SETI people are watching I Love Lucy episodes and still wondering if there is intelligent life in the universe.

3) I think the whole concept of SETI@Home specifically, and distributed computing in general is genius.  The perfect solution to what was an obviously difficult problem involving shoe-string budgets.  Well done!
