Personal background
My background is pretty varied, starting in Chemistry, then Mathematics, then Theoretical Chemistry, and onward to Computer Science. Currently I'm working as the Bioinformatics Manager for the General Clinical Research Center at the Medical University of South Carolina. Our purpose is to provide facilities and expertise to clinical investigators. We are involved in a variety of research projects, ranging from Diabetes to new drug testing, Pediatrics, and Hypertension.

My Hobbies include my computer of course, as well as a new interest in SCUBA Diving and Photography (maybe even merge the two one day). I also enjoy just working on old houses, as one of my friends is sure to appreciate.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that life can exist elsewhere. But it's a big Universe as well as an old Universe. My personal belief is that life has sprung up on numerous worlds and that for some reason or another, the Universe chooses to wipe out life when it can. Just ss it has attempted on our world many times before.

I have no doubt that we should transmit a beacon. It will take years and years for it to travel to some our nearest neighbors and we have not seen life on those yet. I would hope that one day, we could travel to other stars and maybe even beat our own signal out into space (sorry Einstein, but I hope we can travel faster than light).

As to what to send into space, a simple hello should suffice. Enough information to let the receiver know that it's not random, that it's not unintelligent, and that the receiver is not alone either! Perhaps one day, they will send it back.

I run SETI@home to just help out. I have the computer power just sitting there most of the time and anything I can do to help further science exploration, I will do. I also help out because far sighted projects like this are far and few between. Most governments live in the here and now, from budget year to budget year, without thinking for the long term. I don't mean 10 years or 20 years. But 100 years to 500 years. SETI is a long term project. It's a big Universe after all!
