Personal background
i'm 26(hex) - go figure it out. and leave the calculator to make it a bit more of a challenge ;-) engineers, i admit, do have an edge here, good ones anyway ...

the guy on the picture is my son. looks much better than me.

i live in the beautiful city of hamburg. i am, however, not a hamburger. that is something you can eat and i don't think i am.

after having changed our electricity supply contract to 100% hydro power (from bavaria, ironically) i can leave the computer running night and day without disastrous environmental consequences.

what i need next is a faster machine.

The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
well, yes, i want to finish my work unit in about an hour :-)

no, seriously. i do believe in life on other planets. and i'll also tell you why.

i believe in God. although i probably wouldn't describe myself as a very spiritual or even pious person, i am convinced that life, the universe (and, yes, everything) is not coincidental but rather a part of creation. and creation is more than we can see or perceive, but that's a different story again.

taking that, i derive from the holy writings (from different religions, incidentally) that human life is the highest form of life possible in this universe with its physical laws, which must, of course, be the same everywhere. that in turn means that for the zillions of stars with planets in this and all the other galaxies you can calculate the probablility for how many systems there are that provide conditions similar to earth with water and an oxygen containing atmosphere and so on such that life can evolve. and that then would be life similar to our human life. possibly with differences due to gravitational or temperature or other mean values and light spectrum etc. but nonetheless quite similar.

and finally, as it was unconceivable to travel from one continent to another in a matter of hours just about a century ago, i firmly believe that space travel will eventually provide the means for contacting and actually meeting with other civilizations in the future. however, this will only happen after humanity has achieved unity. only then will we be mature for the next step in evolution. and i don't expect to live to see it become a reality. it will take a bit longer :-) but we'll get there.
