Personal background
I'm 54 years old. I was born, raised and still live in San Diego. My beautiful wife and I have three sons: Michael Sean(30), Eric Jason(24) and Kevin Patrick(17). In case you couldn't tell from their names, I'm of Irish descent. We also have three grand children, two boys and a girl.
My wife and I are active with the PTA at the local elementary school, she is the president and I edit/print the newsletter. We are also band boosters at the high school.
SETI@Home has been our screen saver since we bought a 486SX with a 24K modem in 1993. We kept it through the next generation, a 200MMX with a 56K modem. We are now running a Celeron 500 with cable modem and I'm currently getting the parts together to build an Intel 2.0Gig with some extra goodies.
I've been an auto mechanic(they call us technicians now) for 30 years. I repair computers at home and, in the spring, I do tax preparation from my home office.
I have been a science and science fiction fan since I was old enough to start reading books with words to go with the pictures. I think I have always believed that we CAN'T be the only sapient beings in the universe. To missquote Jodie Foster(in "Contact"): "Wouldn't that be a terrible waste of space?"
I just hope I'm still here when First Contact occurs, whatever form it takes.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I started running SETI@home because I thought it would be great if my computer found the key piece of evidence pointing to an alien (to us) civilization. I still hope for that, but I will be happy to be part of the organization that finds that evidence.
We have been transmitting "beacons" ever since the first radio and television signals, especially those sent to satellites. Surely our conversations with the Apollo astronauts went far beyond our solar system. I believe that first contact will be as much of a surprise to them as to us.
I also believe that the contact will be friendly. I cannot conceive of a race of beings, capable of contact over galactic distances, bent on our distruction.
