Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think life exists in many places besides ours, on other planets as well as in different incomprehensible (to us, so far) dimensions. The imaginable benefits
to science, medicine and all major disiplines would probably be astounding.
I think the biggest possible danger would be right here on Earth in the area of religion.
I think many organized religions would be threatened by the discovery of life
elsewhere and perhaps the this could cause a fair amount of dissent amoung many.
Also, I think we would have to be careful with how we would handle the idea of "different life" than ours. The prejudices and hatred of "differences"
is so great on this planet within our own species, I have trouble imagining
how some people could accept beings of a different species, when they are so
un-accepting of fellow humans.
I run Seti@Home because I love the stars and have always imagined that
we are not alone. I think this is a very important scientific endeavor and I am very pleased to be a part of the adventure. I love the cool screensaver.
